Streamlining Quiz Creation with AI: Leveraging the GIFT Format

Set-ups/Technology required:

Required materials include:

• a word document with the questions;
• answer options and correct answers;
• Notepad or any simple text editing application;
• a GenAI tool;
• Moodle page which has the Quiz activity.

Procedure

Step 1: Prompt

the AI needs to be trained with a simple prompt, such as “convert the following true/false questions to GIFT format to be used in Moodle with the title ‘True or False?’” (Image 1)

This prompt will need to be adjusted for the type of question you are including, such as true/false or multiple choice, and the title.

Step 2: Copy questions

Questions with clearly delineated answers can be copied from the Word document and pasted into the GenAI to be converted to GIFT format (Image 2).

Step 3: Paste into .txt

You will need to copy and paste the output into a .txt file, such as the software Notepad or TextEdit. Be sure to double-check that the questions and answers are correct.

Step 4: Import

Now, you are ready to import! Go to the question bank in Moodle and choose “import questions from file” to import the .txt file. You will need to select the GIFT format from the file format selections. (Image 3)

The questions should look similar to the questions in Image 4.

Caveats and Alternatives

It can be quite a time-saving tool for those who need to create quizzes on Moodle. However, one caveat is that, thus far, this only works for true/false or MCQs. Any more complicated question structures, such as matching or drag and drop, still need to be entered manually, but this is potentially an area for future development.

You can also accomplish the same results with other GenAI platforms, such as ChatGPT, which may allow you to upload a word document rather than copy and paste.
